The free tier

What's free, forever

No trial clock, no quota, no personal-use clause.

Comment spam protection
Blocked bots never create a comment, so your moderation queue stays empty instead of filling with "spam" entries to triage.
WooCommerce review protection
Product reviews are WordPress comments underneath. Fake reviews are stopped the same way, out of the box. Why stores get fake reviews →
Bypass channels closed
Pingbacks, trackbacks and bots that POST straight to the comment endpoint are rejected while protection is on.
No CAPTCHA, no keys, no quota
Nothing for visitors to solve. No Google reCAPTCHA keys to create and no monthly assessment quota to watch.
Proof it is working
A blocked-spam counter on your dashboard, a weekly summary on the Comments screen, and a live protection status.
Email typo suggestions
Visitors who mistype their email address are offered a correction, so fewer typos end up in your comments.
Setup

Install in under a minute

  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins, then Add New, and search for SpamKill.
  2. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. That is all. Protection is on. If you use a page cache, purge it once so visitors receive the protected form.
No personal-use clause

Free for commercial sites. Really.

Akismet's WordPress.org listing says its keys are free for personal blogs and that paid subscriptions are available for businesses and commercial sites. In July 2026 Akismet staff put it plainly in their support forum: any business usage must use a paid plan. Akismet Pro covers one site and 500 checks a month.

SpamKill's comment and review protection is free on every site, commercial or not, with no key and no monthly allowance. You can run both at the same time and compare the counts before you decide.

Under the hood

How it works, in one paragraph

Your comment form is served through SpamKill's cloud. When someone submits, SpamKill looks at how the form was filled, not what was typed: timing, interaction patterns, device and network signals. Bots and solver farms give themselves away even when the text looks clean. Legitimate submissions are delivered to your site in real time and discarded from our servers; only spam contributes to aggregated frequency counts. The plugin fails safe: if a form can't be served through SpamKill, real comments are never rejected. Full details are in the External Services section of the plugin's listing.

Common questions

Questions people ask

Rarely, and never silently. A flagged person is offered a quick way to verify, such as signing in or using a passkey, and their submission goes through.

Yes. That setting decides who may review; SpamKill decides whether the submitter is a bot. Use both.

Yes. The protected form is cacheable. Purge your page cache once after activation.

Yes. SpamKill acts before a comment is created; whatever they do happens afterwards. Nothing to remove.

The free tier covers comments and reviews. Contact and lead-gen forms (Contact Form 7, WPForms, Gravity Forms, Elementor Forms, Divi, Formidable Forms, Forminator, Fluent Forms, Everest Forms and custom HTML forms) are covered by SpamKill Pro, which comes with every paid plan and starts with a 30-day free trial, no credit card.

Running many sites?

For agencies and freelancers

Nothing to configure per site, no keys to store, no accounts to hand over when a client leaves. Activate it on every site you maintain and the dashboard counter does the reporting for you. If a client also needs forms protected, the partner program covers client licenses from one account.
